While most probably remember Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, I was blessed to be one of the children who grew up watching his first local production- "The Children's Corner". My mother and I watched it together on WQED out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I loving remember Jose, Daniel Striped Tiger, X the Owl, King Friday XIII, Henries Pussycat and others. I most remember learning french from another tiger puppet. I loved the music from that show and still find myself singing the song about the morning. The following quote from Fresh AirOnLine tells more about this show that I loved so much as a child.
David Albert
"In November, 1953, at the request of WQED Pittsburgh,
the nation's first community-sponsored educational television station,
Rogers moved back to Pennsylvania. The station was not yet on the air,
and Rogers was asked to develop the first program schedule. One of the
first programs he produced was The Children's Corner. It was a daily, live,
hour-long program with music and puppets and host Jose Carey. Rogers served
as puppeteer, composer and organist. In 1955, The Children's Corner won
the Sylvania Award for the best locally produced children's program in
the country. It was on The Children's Corner that several regulars of today's
Mister Rogers' Neighborhood made their first appearances -- among them,
Daniel Striped Tiger, X the Owl, King Friday XIII, Henries Pussycat and
Lady Elaine Fairchilde." http://freshair.npr.org/guest_info_fa.jhtml?name=2002/fredrogers
The following is a tribute from a friend I made in the Navy, who's home town is not far from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Dear Friends,
All of America lost one of the most Blessed and gifted people ever to live
amongst us. I speak of Fred
Rogers who died today of stomach
cancer.
I once had the privilege of meeting Mr. Rogers in Ligonier, Penna. He was
shooting a scene where he
was walking west down Main Street
past the Post Office and had asked Corky Barnhart if she would like to
be
in the scene by walking in the
opposite direction and just wave at him as he passed by. She declined but
managed to grab me as I "conveniently"
entered upon the scene and said, "He'll do it!", which I did and
I
am forever linked with that wonderful
man and the many blessings he was to our nation's children.[I never saw
the episode and can't confirm if
it ever was aired, but even so, I am honored to have been a minuscule
part of that great work of his].
Mr. Rogers, as we once were, Heaven is now Blessed to receive that wonderful
spirit that you so
graciously shared with America's
children. In all the history of the world, too few people can own up to
the
description of "When God made that
person, He broke the mold!" Mr. Fred Rogers, you were such a person!
Thank You Very Much!
In Memoriam And Appreciation,
Salvatore A. Cosentino
