BACKFIRED - A nation born for
religious tolerance no longer tolerates religion

'From
its beginning, the new continent seemed destined to be the home of
religious tolerance. Those who claimed the right of individual choice
for themselves finally had to grant it to others.'- Calvin Coolidge,
May 3, 1925
I will attempt to give you an
overview of this book. I heard the arthur telling about it on the
radio. As I understand it the Puritans basically tolerated other
Puritans. Since most of the colonies were Protestant they
tolerated other Protestant churches. They were fearful of
Catholics for they did not think that a person could be loyal both to
the Pope and their local government. Eventually the Catholics were
included and the Constitution of the United States was written.
When the constitution was written religious freedom was included for
all Christian Churches. Later the Jews were allowed to hold
office in government, therefore extending tolerance to the Jewish faith
in our country. Basically any one that believed in one God was
considered ok.
Eventually tolerance was extended to all religions in America.
And that is as it should be. Each person should find God and His
truth. We do no see Jesus forcing anyone to be a Christian.
Christians should be missionaries to their neighbors. Next
tolerance was extended to the Atheist. All people are considered
equal in the eyes of the Government. Is not America great.
But what have the Atheist done? They were the last to be accepted from
a tolerance born through Christian faith. Now tolerance is only
to those who are politically correct.
I would like to say a word about "politically correct". From the
first day I ever heard that term it has sent a chill up my back.
To me that term sounds like Nazism or Communism. Are we going to
let the government tell us what is right and wrong?
'The
frustrating thing is that those who are attacking religion claim they
are doing it in the name of tolerance.... Question: Isn’t the real
truth that they are intolerant of religion?'- Ronald Reagan, August 23,
1984
